ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say an Uber driver and his passenger were hospitalized with serious injuries after the driver pulled onto the path of an oncoming car.

St. Petersburg police say 38-year-old Robert Marthaller picked up his passenger after midnight Saturday. After his passenger, 29-year-old Gary Bruce, got into the backseat, authorities say the Uber driver made a U-turn and pulled directly into the path of a Ford Mustang. The Mustang’s driver and passenger sustained minor injuries but authorities say Bruce’s injuries are serious and that Marthaller’s injuries are life-threatening.

Under terms and conditions that riders agree to, the app-based ride-hailing companies say they aren’t legally liable for the safety of their drivers or the quality of their services. That’s because the drivers are independent contractors, not employees.
