WILTON MANORS, Fla. (WSVN) — A Wilton Manors resident is breathing a sigh of relief that he and his pet cockatoo are OK after a truck came crashing into their apartment.

According to Wilton Manors Police, a single vehicle collided with the apartment, located near Powerline Road, after the driver lost control of his vehicle, Tuesday morning.

Homeowner Kemel Bandhu said the truck ended up partly inside his unit, disrupting his morning routine with his beloved pet, 12-year-old Bumbo. “I went in there, and I tell him, you know, rub him, pet him, ‘Good morning,’ and so forth,” said Bandhu. “I step away and, and 10 seconds after stepping away, I hear the loudest crash I could ever hear.”

According to police, the driver was following another car too closely and was unable to stop in time. “I tried, but you know, I very much lose control,” said the driver.

Nearby residents believe cars speeding on Powerline Road is an issue. One neighbor, Lee Young, heard the accident as it happened. “Just a loud bang,” said Young. “Just, ‘errrr!’ and then came out, and that was it.”

No injuries were reported, especially for Bandhu’s cockatoo, who danced for 7News’ cameras. “Thank God he’s alive, man. Thank God he’s OK,” said Bandhu. “If I was standing there, right there at that very spot, 10 seconds more, I would’ve got hit by blocks or God knows what.”

Tuesday afternoon, the large hole the truck left behind was boarded up with plywood.

The driver of the truck was cited for following another vehicle too closely.
