NORTH MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A North Miami Beach robbery backfired, Monday night, when a thief accidentally shot his accomplice, according to police.
The victim said he returned to his North Miami Beach home at around 9:30 p.m., Monday, when a man in a car asked him for directions. The victim, who didn’t want to be named, said a second thief then got out of the car and demanded his valuables.
“I stopped right in front of my house, and I see a suspicious car pull up to me,” the victim said. “I give him directions, next thing you know, the passenger comes out with someone out their car. He tells me, get down, give me your valuables. I give him my valuables … I hear a gunshot. I fall to the floor. I say, it’s not me.”
North Miami Police said they think one of the thieves’ guns accidentally went off and shot the accomplice.
“I thought someone got hit, and I was looking at myself, and I saw the gunman or whoever tried to rob me,” the victim said. “They were gripping for life or looking like they were hurt, and once I saw that it wasn’t me, I tried to hide, but other than that my instincts kicked in to run.”
Police said the thief drove his accomplice to the hospital and drove away. That accomplice is now in critical condition.
There is surveillance video of him being dropped off at the hospital, according to police, but North Miami Police have not released it.
“Be cautious and always check your surroundings,” the victim said. “Never, ever think that you can’t get hit or your untouchable and pray constantly. I try to pray everyday, every second I can.”
If you have any information on the whereabouts of the thief on the run, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $1,000 reward.
