SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The teenager at the center of a California police sex scandal is now facing a reduced assault charge in Florida.
Court papers show Florida prosecutors reducing the charge from a felony to a misdemeanor Monday. She no longer faces a lengthy prison term that could have derailed the criminal prosecution of at least seven current and former police officers in northern California.
The Alameda County district attorney said Friday that she will charge the seven men with a range of crimes as soon as the teenager returns to the San Francisco Bay Area from Florida to serve as a key witness.
The teenager was arrested Aug. 29, three days after arriving at Stuart, Florida, facility for allegedly biting a security guard at the center. She was initially charged with a felony.
