SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) — A South Florida man was honored for being a hero, Thursday night.

Javier Egana was awarded a “Medal of Valor” by the Sunny Isles Beach police chief for courageously saving a woman’s life. “I feel very emotional to receive this honor that the city has given me, the City of Sunny Isles, for this humanitarian act,” said Egana, in Spanish, after he accepted his medal.

Months ago, witnesses watched as Egana jumped in the water at the Newport Pier to save a woman from drowning.

Thursday night, this woman finally met the man who saved her life, giving him a warm embrace.

Along with the medal, folks from Newport surprised him with a complimentary vacation package.
