SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - The Family of South Dade Senior High Principal Javier Perez announced a major moment in his recovery process.

Perez’s wife, Maytee Perez, posted Monday via a GoFundMe page for her husband that he no longer needs a ventilator to breathe.

Previous attempts to wean him off the device had been unsuccessful, until now. “After several trial runs off of the ventilator, Javi is breathing on his own. This is a huge step! We thank God and every single person who has prayed for us, sent positive thoughts, and get well wishes,” said Perez’s wife in the GoFundMe post.

Perez was run over by a woman who lost control of her SUV at Tamiami Park, in April. Both of his legs had to be amputated after the accident.

The driver, Marilyn Aguilera, is currently under house arrest, charged with driving under the influence.
