MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Hotels welcoming visitors in Miami Beach are taking the right precautions to make sure their guests are safe from Zika during their stay.
Although many hotels hope to keep visitors safe, they aren’t bringing attention to the virus. Some tourists told 7News that they are bringing extra mosquito repellant as a precaution.
Two women brought their OFF! bug spray with them from Atlanta. “I was concerned, but it’s my birthday so I came to Miami,” said tourist Tauvia Blue.
They’re aware of the virus but aren’t very worried. “We already paid for the trip,” said visitor Cece Jean Baptiste.
According to the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, there have been no signs that Zika fears have taken a toll on summer tourism in Miami-Dade County. “There has not been any significant report of cancellation,” said Rolando Aedo, who is with the Greater Miami Visitors and Convention Bureau.
Aedo said South Florida hotels know how to protect visitors from mosquitoes. “That is something that our hospitality community and our hotels in particular are very well prepared for,” he said.
“We make sure we have bug spray on every porch,” said hotel manager Loren Moore.
The Roam Miami Extended Hotel is armed with bug spray, citronella candles and Zika information for guests. “We want to make sure we have all the info that we need to give to them because these are international travelers,” Moore said.
According to Moore, no cancellations have been made at Roam Miami hotel. “None so far! Cross your fingers,” she said.
7News spoke with several other hotels in South Beach and Miami, where they said no cancellations were made due to the Zika virus. Some said they believe if the cases continue to increase, they may start to have a problem.
