SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - A beloved South Miami-Dade principal is making progress on his road to recovery.

Principal Javi Perez will soon begin rehabilitation, according to his wife, after spending more than two months hospitalized at Kendall Regional Medical Center.

In a post on Perez’s GoFundMe page, Perez’s wife, Maytee Perez, wrote that her husband may soon be discharged. “As we get ready to leave what has become our home for the last 70 days, I am overcome with a plethora of emotions- gratitude, appreciation, excitement, and believe it or not — a little sadness. Kendall Regional Medical Center has become our home,” she stated.

Perez underwent 19 surgeries and lost both of his legs after a woman driving while intoxicated ran him over at Tamiami Park in April.

The woman responsible, Marilyn Aguilera, has been charged with DUI and has pleaded not guilty.
