MIAMI (WSVN) - The National Black Police Association hosted a workshop on police stops in Miami, Saturday morning.
Retired City of Miami Police sergeants Roger Smith and Willie Jackson invited the public out to teach them what to do when they are stopped by police. The two-hour event took place at the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum, located at 480 N.W. 11th St.
Jackson said the goal of the workshop is to improve race and police relations, as well as refine the image of officers. “In light of all the recent killings of unarmed black males, we felt the need to educate the public, especially the black community, about what to do if you’re stopped by the police,” he said, “because a lot of times situations get out of hand, and things are said and escalate, and people lose their lives.”
This effort was initiated by the Miami Chapter of the NBPA and is now a partnership with the City of Miami Retired Police Officers Community Benevolent Association, which manages the museum.
