PEMBROKE PINES, FLA. (WSVN) - Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a shooter after a woman was shot and killed as she was getting ready to head to work in Pembroke Pines.

The shooting took place at the French Villas Condominium, on the 600 block of Northwest 79th Avenue, at around 6:15 a.m., Thursday.

“I received numerous calls, and we were able to determine that several shots had been fired,” said Pembroke Pines Police Capt. Al Xiques.

Officials said the 23-year-old victim was walking to her car when somebody in another vehicle approached her and shot her over a dozen times.

Residents of the apartment complex heard the shots.

“That means he didn’t even stop to think. You know what I’m saying?” resident Evelyn Arguello said. “To think a little bit, like, if he did it by mistake, but I know — he probably knew her.”

When police arrived on the scene, they found the victim dead in her car.

“It’s very preliminary in the investigation, at this time,” said Pembroke Pines Police Capt. Al Xiques. “Based on the circumstances involved, we do believe that the victim is likely to have been targeted. This does not appear to be a random act of violence. Therefore, we don’t believe that there is a continued threat to the community.”

The sound of gunshots were a painful reminder for Leslie Morales, who was left partially paralyzed by gun violence.

“It was just like 18 years ago,” Morales said. “It just brings me back memories.”

Officials said the scene hinted at the victim being ambushed.

“She was met by the suspect or whoever shot her,” said Xiques.

Officers are now searching for the shooter, and apartment complex residents are worried.

“Now, I’m afraid that he would even get up in the morning and leave, going to my car and go into work because of this, so I think this community needs a little bit more security,” Arguello said. “Those shots, you know, those six gunshots, you know what I’m saying? That’s ridiculous, so I just hope they catch the guy.”

The identity of the victim has not yet been revealed.
