MIAMI (WSVN) - Police are investigating a deadly crash that left one young man dead in Coconut Grove, early Thursday morning.

It happened along U.S. 1 between Douglas Road and Brooker Street, just after midnight.

According to Miami Police, an SUV was traveling southbound on U.S. 1 when 26-year-old Maynor De Jesus Portobanco swerved onto the opposite lanes, hitting a silver Hyundai straight on.

“We had a vehicle that lost control, hit a couple of trees, veered over into the median and subsequently ended up on top of a vehicle going in the opposite direction,” said Miami Police officer Frederica Burden.

Police also found cocaine inside the SUV. The driver of the SUV died on impact.

7News crews were on the scene as the SUV was being towed away with the body still inside.

The driver of the Hyundai was not transported to the hospital. He is said to be OK. “He is very fortunate that he was shaken up due to the accident but had no serious injuries at all,” Burden said.

U.S. 1 was shut down for several hours overnight as crews cleaned up the debris. The road has since reopened.

Police said this is the fifth fatal accident at this exact location in just three years.
