PALM BAY, Fla. (AP) — A 6-year-old Florida girl was accidentally shot in the head by an older sibling Tuesday evening and died early the next morning, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at a Palm Bay apartment, Florida Today reported. Detectives initially investigated whether the gunshot was self-inflicted but later determined she had been with a 10-year-old sibling.
“We believe it’s an accidental shooting,” Palm Bay police spokesman Mike Smith said.
Responding Palm Bay police officers attempted to resuscitate the child, officials said. Paramedics took her to a hospital in nearby Melbourne, where she later died.
It wasn’t immediately known where the sibling obtained the firearm or if it belonged to anyone in the apartment.
Officials didn’t immediately name the victim or the older sibling. No criminal charges have been filed.
