FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) - A woman accused of suffocating her two children inside a relative’s South Florida apartment was unable to appear in court, Friday.
A public defender represented 40-year-old Sophia Hines in a Fort Lauderdale bond court. She has been charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of her 3-year-old daughter, Ariel Hines, and her 7-month-old son, St. Leo Hines Singleton.
Hines’ lawyer said his client is in a terrible mental state and was therefore unable to face a judge.
Police arrested Hines, early Thursday, at her cousin’s home in Miramar, where she was visiting from Philadelphia with her children. Detectives said, while the mother has admitted her alleged crime, she has not given a motive.
Hines is being held without bond at the Broward County Jail.
