MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A drive-by shooting in South Beach sent a man and a woman to the hospital, Thursday morning. Police later arrested one man on unrelated charges.
According to Miami Beach Police, just before 5 a.m., a call was issued to report shots fired in the area of Ninth Street and Collins Avenue.
Surveillance video captured a silver Mercedes-Benz SUV parked on the side of the road. The woman and man in the SUV were then shot at by the alleged drive-by shooter in a white Toyota Corolla as bystanders on the street ducked and tried to hide.
Footage from across the street showed a man and a woman running for shelter.
Officials said they arrived and found no victims. Shortly after, they received a call concerning two victims with gunshot wounds at Mercy Hospital. Police said both victims drove themselves to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police later located the Corolla a few blocks away from the scene of the shooting. Witness Jeff Surprenant was recording with his cellphone. All of a sudden, from all different angles, all these cop cars surrounded the white vehicle,” he said. “They were yelling at him to get out of the car.”
Police arrested 24-year-old Kareem Stuart for fleeing, driving with a suspended license and possessing marijuana. Investigators said the possibility of other charges will have to wait on ballistics and forensics investigation.
The shooting took place next to the Sherbrooke Hotel. The hotel’s owner, Mitch Novick, told 7News he heard the shots. “Gunfire erupted, I ran to the window, I called the police,” he said. “I wish them the best, and I hope justice is served.”
The shooting marks a violent start to Memorial Beach Weekend in South Beach. “It is unfortunate, because we’re traveling and we don’t want to come to shootings,” said one visitor. “No one thought it would begin like this.”
