MIAMI (WSVN) - The legal limbo for a group of Cuban migrants who were found at lighthouse off Sugarloaf Key may soon be sorted out.
A decision on whether the 19 Cuban rafters who jumped from their boat and swam to the American Shoal Lighthouse will be allowed to remain in the U.S. or be sent back to Cuba will be made Friday. The incident occurred last Friday, May 20.
A group of lawyers are prepared to go to federal court if the migrants are repatriated. They claim the lighthouse is U.S. territory.
The migrants are currently being held at sea on a Coast Guard cutter.
