MARATHON, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a speeding motorist managed to outrun deputies in the Florida Keys but then called 911 a short time later after crashing his car.

A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office news release says a deputy first spotted 38-year-old Jason Dyer’s white BMW traveling 90 mph through Marathon early Sunday morning. The Miami man refused to pull over, and a sergeant ordered the deputy to stop pursuing because of the dangerous speeds.

The release says several more deputies spotted the car over the next half-hour, and then it finally crashed in Islamorada. Authorities say Dyer initially fled the scene on foot but then called 911 to say he was injured.

The release says Dyer was hospitalized but didn’t list a condition.

Deputies say he’ll likely face charges. It wasn’t known if he had an attorney.
