KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a South Florida man has died while in custody at the Monroe County Detention Center.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin says in a statement released Monday that 61-year-old Earl Colston of Miami Gardens was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday morning.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Herrin says Colston had been in the sick bay area of the jail for most of the time while he was there because of medical conditions that he suffered prior to his arrest.

Colston was arrested June 5 and charged with driving with a suspended license, third or subsequent offense.

State authorities are investigating his death.
