MIAMI (WSVN) - Officers and employees of the City of Miami Police Department and members of the community were honored at an awards ceremony, Thursday night.

Officers and employees of the month for April received awards at “Do the Right Thing” in the City of Miami Police Academy for their life-saving and administrative excellence.

Awards were also given to people in the community who “do the right thing,” including one high school senior who kept her good grades after her life changed three years ago when her mom was diagnosed with cancer. She even won a trip to the nation’s capitol earlier this year.

“I had to learn how to do everything around my house,” said student Patricia Vega. “How to actually do things for school on my own in the morning, and I had to pretty much grow up on my own until she passed away this summer, and it’s been hard.”

She’s headed to Florida International University in the fall.
