TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Another lawsuit is being filed over the process used to select three new Florida Supreme Court justices.
The League of Women Voters of Florida and Common Cause late Friday asked the state Supreme Court to block a statewide nominating commission from interviewing candidates for three spots on the court.
Age limits are forcing three justices to retire on the day Gov. Rick Scott is scheduled to leave the governor’s office. Scott in September asked a nominating commission to start accepting applications. But the Supreme Court ruled in October that Scott does not have the authority to name the replacements.
Despite the ruling, a statewide panel is planning to interview candidates and come up with finalists by early November.
The lawsuit argues that the commission should be forced to keep accepting applications until at least Jan. 8.
