A South Florida man received no bond in court, Monday, after police said he killed his roommate at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.
Police arrested 23-year-old Andre Brown on second-degree murder charges after, they said, he killed his roommate at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Saturday night.
According to investigators, just after 7 p.m., medical staff informed Miami Beach Police officers responding to a disturbance call that the victim was involved in some type of physical altercation with Brown. An officer discovered the victim lying on the bathroom floor and bleeding from the head. He was pronounced dead.
According to the police report, when the officers detained Brown, he stated, “It was self-defense. I had to do it.”
While at the Miami Beach Police Station, Brown waived his Miranda rights and confirmed he and the victim were roommates. According to the police report, he told detectives he was using his hospital room’s bathroom when the victim walked in and touched Brown’s private parts. Brown told investigators he then struck the victim numerous times with closed fists, then choked him with both hands.
Brown was then placed under arrest.
The hospital released a statement that reads, “This is a tragic incident that took place within the confines of our psychiatric health unit. Our deepest sympathies are with the deceased’s family and friends. The safety and well-being of our patients is our top priority. We continue to work with authorities in their ongoing investigation.”
