MIRAMAR, Fla. (AP) — Miramar’s new $23 million police headquarters is finally opening.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1UQa3AF) the city’s police officers moved Monday into the Mediterranean-style building adjacent to City Hall.
The three-story, 65,000 square-foot building, which will also house the city’s Emergency Operations Center, has full backup power and is Category 5 hurricane rated. It’ll have some mixed-use on the first floor, including retail shops and restaurants. The building also has a large community room for public meetings.
Mayor Wayne Messam says the building positions police to protect the city with the latest technology in their immediate environment.
The department had been using a makeshift facility since Hurricane Wilma tore a hole in the roof of the old headquarters in 2005.
Officials broke ground on the new building in 2014.
