HOMESTEAD, FLA. (WSVN) - Lobster mini-season is coming to a close Thursday night.

Boaters all around the Sunshine State first hit the water at midnight, Wednesday, in order to take advantage of the opportunity to catch some crustaceans.

Those looking to catch lobsters will need to act fast, as the mini-season will end at midnight, Thursday.

“It was a lot of boats out last night,” said angler Maurice Young. “Everyone was having a good time lobstering.”

When asked if Young caught any lobster, he said, yes, and that they were “fortunate enough to get our limit.”

According to strict Florida regulations, captured spiny lobsters must always be more than three inches in length when measured in the water. Preferably, officials recommend capturing lobsters that are at least six inches in length.

Only six lobsters can be caught a day, per person for all of Monroe County and Biscayne National Park. Other regulations apply for the rest of Florida.

This season has been painful for one NFL hall of famer, though. Former Miami Hurricane Warren Sapp was bitten by a shark while trying to grab a lobster near Marathon.

Sapp was lobstering on a charter boat when the shark bit him.
