MIAMI (WSVN) - One of Downtown Miami’s most popular hot spots is about to undergo a massive renovation, and on Wednesday, city officials gave a first look at the upcoming changes.
Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado was on hand to accept a $10 million check from Bayside Marketplace during a news conference held Wednesday morning. “The new Bayside is extraordinary,” he said.
Construction equipment will start rolling into the waterfront retail and entertainment complex in two weeks, and officials said it will soon be nearly unrecognizable. “It’s something that’s not only going to enhance Downtown, but it’s something that’s a good deal for the residents of the City of Miami,” said Miami Commissioner Francis Suarez.
The first step will be revamping more than 140,000 square feet of outdoor common areas, including updated piers, redesigned restrooms, new stairs and railings, and fresh landscaping.
But the crown jewel will be built at a later date: the 1,000-foot-tall SkyRise Miami entertainment and observation tower. It’s a vertical adventure park complete with flight simulator and a bungee jump platform.
Revelers at SkyRise will also be able to dance the night away in one of the building’s nightclubs. In addition, the current parking garage will double in size, and more retail spaces will open along Biscayne Boulevard.
“We have the most iconic shopping center in South Florida because it’s on the water,” said Regalado.
Bayside Marketplace opened in 1987.
