NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Devastated loved are speaking out about a young man who, authorities said, was fatally shot during a confrontation in Northwest Miami-Dade following a crash that involved two electric scooters and triggered an ongoing search for the gunman responsible.
Speaking with 7News Monday morning, Stacey said her son Darryl Frankders Johnson died a few weeks shy of his 25th birthday.
“I just – everyone is in shock. We can’t believe it, ’cause Darryl is a good kid,” she said. “He’s a wonderful, awesome son. He makes me proud every day. He wasn’t on the street selling drugs. He was on his way to work to make his honest bread.”
Darryl’s brother, who did not wish to be identified, said he always brought smiles to the faces of people that knew him.
“All he does is just make people laugh, that’s the type of person he was. He was never, ever a problem-causer, none of that,” he said. “My brother did not deserve that.”
7News cameras captured Stacey as she stood on near Northwest 22nd Court and 75th Street. It was near this intersection where, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said, Johnson crashed his electric scooter, Sunday afternoon.
Detectives said the victim crashed into another electric scooter just after 5 p.m., and moments after the collision, both men got into an argument.
“Some sort of dispute ensued after the accident, but we’re not sure what prompted the individual to take out his firearm and shoot his weapon,” said MDSO Deputy Daniel Castillo.
“We heard like gunshots, and we thought that there were fireworks,” said a witness.
Speaking in Spanish, another area resident, who asked not to be identified or show her face on camera, said she heard shots ring out.
The neighbor said she looked out her window, and that’s when she saw a man take off on his scooter, but he was not alone. She said the shooter had a small boy with him, maybe 2 or 3 years old, who saw the whole thing.
“The shooter picked him up off the ground and rode off,” she said.
The neighbor said she called 911 as soon as she realized there was a victim shot right by her house.
“‘There’s an injured person here,’ my husband told me, ‘call police,'” she said.
The neighbor added that the bullets flew within inches of the windows of her house.
Johnson’s body was covered by a yellow tarp and not far from him, evidence markers surrounded his scooter as detectives analyzed the crime scene.
Now, detectives and Johnson’s family are pleading with the community to help get this gunman off the street and get the child to safety.
“We urge the community, please, this is an armed individual that is at large. If anybody has camera footage that lives in the nearby area, please give us a call,” said Castillo.
As for Stacey, she has a message for the shooter.
“I hope you repent for what you did. You’ve hurt a lot of people, you’ve hurt his family, and we miss him and love him a lot,” she said. “You have taken away our angel, and I pray that you ask God for forgiveness.”
As of Monday afternoon, the subject remains on the run.
