NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Police have detained two subjects after a domestic dispute led one of the subjects to exchange gunfire with officers in a Northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood, officials said.
7News cameras captured Miami-Dade Police officers handcuffing the duo, Thursday evening.
According to investigators, officers had responded to a domestic dispute near Northwest Eighth Avenue and 96th Street.
At some point in their investigation, officials said, the officers heard gunfire.
“They heard shots fired. When they looked, there was a vehicle coming down the street with the subject hanging out of the vehicle with a gun,” said MDPD Detective Chris Thomas. “At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the officers and the subject.”
Police said the car continued down the street and crashed. Two subjects bailed out of the vehicle and forced their way into a nearby apartment building.
A resident who asked not to be identified or show his face on camera said he came face to face with the duo.
“I was watching TV, and I see two boys coming inside through the back door,” he said. “You know, opened the door, and they, say, ‘Oh, give me all your phones, give me all the phones!'”
The resident said he ran to a neighbor’s home for help.
“He said he was afraid, because he didn’t know if they were coming to rob him, if they were coming to shoot him, to kill him, he didn’t know anything,” said the neighbor.
Area residents said they heard gunfire at around 5:30 p.m. Shortly after, they said, they saw multiple cruisers arriving and surrounding the area.
Officers could be seen setting up a perimeter extending across several streets. Investigators described the crime scene as a giant “L.”
Aerial footage shows it didn’t take long for officers to surround the apartments and located the subjects.
“The guys were coming out walking backwards with their hands in the air,” said the neighbor, “and [police officers] were telling them, ‘Keep coming, keep coming.'”
A witness who resides in the area, said he saw the subjects flee police and immediately called 911.
Officers were eventually able to apprehend the duo. Thursday night, they were being questioned by police.
No one was hurt.
The perimeter remained in place for hours while police tried to piece together the chain of events.
“We’re still under investigation as to whether they were actually shooting in the area or actually targeting the police officers,” said Thomas.
