MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. (WSVN) - It’s National Custodians Day, so South Florida born rapper Flo Rida made a surprise visit to say thank you to those who keep the campus clean.
It was a very special celebration at Scott Lake Elementary School. Kids, teachers and administrators celebrated National Custodians Day with a very special guest.
Flo Rida arrived in Miami Gardens on Tuesday to honor the employees who work hard to keep the school going.
“National Custodians Day is such a huge day,” he said. “It’s just paying respect and honor to all the custodians who keeps, I would say, the schoolhouse clean. Everybody knows me from my house, but it’s nothing like having the custodians making sure that the house is clean at the school.”
He spent the day alongside the kids and meeting the staff.
But that was just one surprise the school had in store.
“Today, our parents are gonna take over your cleaning duties,” said Flo Rida.
The custodians sat back as members of the Parent Teacher Association took over their shifts for the day.
“I think the custodians deserve a day so we can appreciate them, sometimes they go unappreciated or unnoticed, so today we gave back by assisting them in their daily duties and things they do on the regular that we take for granted,” said Sharmaine Johnson.
But one custodian was especially honored.
James Williams doesn’t have a car and walks from Opa-Locka to Miami Gardens every day for work.
“I wouldn’t be able to tell you right off how far I walk to work,” said Williams.
“Without a hesitation, has been here every single day on time and ready to serve, and I think that is the most genuine heart that you can ever find in this workfield,” said Johnson.
Now, the school is paying him forward.
“You’re going to be receiving a car for our appreciation for your work,” said Johnson.
Williams said he feels very valued.
“The amount of appreciation I’m getting here, I didn’t get anywhere else,” said Williams.
The school’s principal said Flo Rida is one of her former students when she was a teacher at Carol City Senior High.
