COCONUT GROVE, FLA. (WSVN) - A dockside fire in Coconut Grove burned through two boats Tuesday, leaving both vessels charred before crews could douse the flames.
The City of Miami Fire Department said they responded to reports of a boat fire at Three Groves Isle Drive just before 7:30a.m. Tuesday.
“Around 7:30a.m. they got the call, these boats were fully engulfed in flames,” said 7Skyforce Steven Gray.
At the location, crews found two vessels fully engulfed in flames. After assessing the fire and its potential risk factors, officials upgraded the blaze to a Code 1, in which additional fire resources like a fireboat and hazardous teams were deployed.
“You’re looking at what a Code 1 fire response looks like. Look at all these City Miami firefighters on scene at the Three Groves Isle marina,” said Gray.
7News spoke to Levi Diaz who said he woke up to the commotion downstairs at the marina, eventually going to check on his own boat.
“I just see like a boat catching on fire and then it spread onto another boat,” he said. “You couldn’t see out of the balcony it was like pretty bad.”
Fire officials began an aggressive fire attack and worked swiftly to put out the blaze, utilizing foam to help suppress the raging flames.
Within 10 minutes or so the fire was brought under control. It did not spread to nearby boats and no injuries were reported.
“A great job by the firefighters the men and women saving other boats and property damage here. There are going to be sending in the Coast Guard[…],” said Gray.
The vessels involved in the fire ranged from 30 to 40 feet in length, while two nearby boats measured between 26 and 36 feet merely suffered heat exposure.
According to fire officials, much of the damage sustained to the adjacent boats were to their exterior sides, no interior damage was reported.
The Miami Fire Investigation Unit is on scene and working to determine the cause of the fire.
