MIAMI (WSVN) - State authorities said they arrested a South Florida mother in connection to the death of her 18-month-old son from a drug overdose earlier this year.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed Friday morning that their State Assistance for Fentanyl Eradication task force arrested Pearlandria Boujolly.
The 29-year-old Miami-Dade County resident faces one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child under 18 years old.
FDLE said the Jan. 3 death of Boujolly’s child was the result of fentanyl exposure.
Miami Fire Rescue units responded to an apartment in the area of Northwest 15th Avenue and 65th Street in the early morning hours of Jan. 3 after a 911 call reported a child appearing to be in cardiac arrest.
Hours later, 18-month-old Cameron Boujolly would be pronounced dead by paramedics.
According to the arrest report, cameras inside the home show the young boy with “something white in his hands and placing it in his mouth several times.” Minutes later, as he tries to stand up, he keeps falling over.
Then, he’s seen “lying in a prone position while it appears his body is making involuntary contracting movements until no additional movement is ever seen,” according to the arrest report.
Investigators said an autopsy revealed Cameron had fentanyl and trace amounts of cocaine in his blood.
Detectives said the drugs were left in an unlocked room, and the child then came in contact with those substances.
“Any time you have a child that dies due to the complete and utter negligence of the parents. This is a death that is avoidable, is completely responsible and that person is going to jail for a long time,” said Miami Police Chief Edwin Lopez.
Lopez said drugs were not the only thing that the children in the home had access to.
“The negligence of parents who left, not only narcotics and drugs, but even firearms accessible to a child,” he said.
Boujolly was placed under arrest on Thursday.
Officials said several children were inside of the home at the time of her arrest.
She appeared in court on Friday.
“It looks like the children were unsupervised, had access to narcotics as well as guns and the child ended up dying of a fentanyl overdose,” a prosecutor told Judge Maria Espinosa Dennis during Pearlandria’s bond court hearing.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case, as the investigation continues.
As for Pearlandria, she was not given bond and remains behind bars in Miami-Dade jail.
Court records show that at the time of her arrest, Pearlandria was out on bond from a felony case in 2020.
