MIAMI (WSVN) - Two people are dead following a violent chain of events that began with an overnight stabbing in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, police said.
City of Miami Police units responded to a call of a stabbing at the Icon Residences high-rise, located at 485 Brickell Ave., at around 2:15 a.m. on Sunday.
“Once our officers arrived on the scene, they went up to the 34th floor where they located a male who had been stabbed,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Residents and visitors walked out to a crime scene, as the investigation was just beginning.
“I’m doing my little morning walk, and I hear about what’s going on, and it’s a tragedy, it’s a big tragedy,” said area resident Roberto Hernandez.
“I just saw some people in the building [with] ‘crime scene’ on the back of their shirt and decided to see what was going on,” said witness Evan Cohen. “Concerning, to say the least.”
A security guard reportedly told police that they saw someone with bloodstains taking off from the building.
After speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance video, detectives determined that the assailant fled the scene and entered an building currently under construction across the street from the Icon Residences.
Police then brought in their SWAT team, K-9 units and drones to try to find the subject.
“Our SWAT team and our investigators have to go floor by floor in this building using caution, because we don’t know what the stage is of the construction, to find any evidence or anyone that’s in there,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
After searching multiple floors of this building with K-9 units, police said, the perpetrator was found dead on one of the lower floors.
Detectives said it appears the subject fell from the construction site, though they said, it’s unknown if it was intentional or accidental.
“There was no party going on, it was not a large group, so this is – it seems like whoever did this just went into that apartment, and it’s part of the investigation that we’re trying to determine what happened, what led to this,” said Vega.
Homicide detectives spent a large part of their day gathering evidence at the construction site. They looked for clothing or a weapon.
At the Icon Residences, investigators went floor by floor and spoke with more witnesses.
By late Sunday evening, the subject’s body was removed by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner.
“We’re pleased to say that there’s no one else at large, and the community doesn’t need to be concerned,” said Vega.
Miami Police Chief Manny Morales issued the following statement:
“I want to assure the community that we are thoroughly investigating this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time. We are also working to understand the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death. At this moment, there is no threat to public safety, and we encourage everyone to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to secure their homes regularly to prevent crime and ensure their safety.”
Just after 10 p.m., 7News cameras captured police vehicles and crime scene tape outside the high-rise.
Police said on Monday that they will not be releasing the identity of the victim nor the subject as the investigation is in its early stages and ongoing.
