MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A street in Miami Beach is being officially named after the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

According to the city of Miami Beach, the Miami Beach City Commission is co-naming Convention Center Drive “Muhammad Ali Way.”

Ali famously shook the world in 1964, when he won the Heavyweight title at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

“Miami Beach was important to him, and he was important to our city and for our convention center that’s undergoing a massive renovation now,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Ricky Arriola. “It’s also another way to honor a man who put that convention center on the map.”

The legendary boxer also trained at Miami Beach’s Fifth Street Gym, on Washington Avenue, to prepare and train for his fights in the ’60s.

Mayor Philip Levine and city commissioners proposed honoring Ali in this way after he passed away, last June.
