MIAMI BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A Miami Beach couple was arrested, Tuesday, after the FBI raided their home due to their alleged involvement in a bankruptcy scheme.
According to Miami Beach Police, police officials assisted the FBI in serving a search warrant for 39-year-old Yechezkel Nissenbaum and 35-year-old Tamar Nissenbaum who committed bankruptcy fraud.
At 6 a.m., police arrived to their apartment, located at 4101 Pine Tree Drive, and arrested the couple on multiple charges. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the couple was charged in a three-count indictment for committing criminal offenses related to their joint petition for chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Furthermore, they are charged with conspiracy to fraudulently transfer or conceal property and the fraudulent transfer and concealment of property. In addition, Yechezkel Nissenbaum is charged with making a false oath and account.
Alex Strassman, a neighbor of the Nissenbaums, said he was shocked. “They’re a great family,” he said. “I would see them around the building all the time. Total shock. I don’t know the details of the case, but obviously, the community is concerned and doesn’t know what’s going on. I just came out here to see if I could find out some more information myself.”
Tuesday afternoon, United States Attorney Wilfredo A. Ferrer, the FBI and Acting United States Trustee Guy G. Gebhardt announced that the two arrests were part of their joint investigative efforts to combat bankruptcy fraud.
As of today, a total of eight defendants have been charged in a bankruptcy scheme involving over $3 million in concealed assets across several cities in Florida.
The couple have three children between the ages of 5 to 10 years old who are now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
The FBI continues to investigate.
