MIAMI (WSVN) - The Miami Marlins gave back to local first responders and military veterans, Friday, as part of their annual day of philanthropy.

Members of the Marlins organization split into teams and went across the city to say thank you to local first responders and veterans. It was part of the team’s sixth annual Day of Civic Engagement Philanthropy.

Marlins Foundation Vice President Alfredo Mesa said this year’s event is even more meaningful after the tragic death of pitcher Jose Fernandez.

“One of the things that Jose Fernandez’s mother asked us after Jose’s passing was to live his legacy and show the community that we’re grateful,” Mesa said, “and to smile and to live out all those great things that were so important to Jose.”

The team also treated 16 students to a holiday shopping spree at Target.
