ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A German man has been sentenced to 41 years in prison for the death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter in central Florida.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that 20-year-old Pascal Kaufmann was sentenced last week after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and molestation. He had been facing a first-degree murder charge and a minimum life sentence.

Authorities say Kaufmann was alone with the girl, Charlie Brame, at their Orlando home in November 2014, right before she was rushed to a hospital, where she died. Kaufmann told police Charlie got hurt by falling off a bed onto the carpeted floor, hitting her head.

After surgery, investigators reported finding evidence of sexual abuse.
