MIAMI (WSVN) - A life-size 24-carat gold mosaic elephant was donated to Zoo Miami in honor of Endangered Species Day.
The mosaic was donated by a company that specializes in full-body displays. According to the company, it took a dozen artists over the span of a year to make the 24-carat work of art.
The statue arrives just in time as Zoo Miami welcomed two other “golden” elephants at the zoo, earlier in May.
“We’re formally introducing two new elephants, Cita and Lisa,” said Zoo Miami Communications Director Ron Magill. “These are two girls who came down from the Virginia Zoo, and they’re coming down basically to retire here. They’re 42 and 48 years old, which is quite ancient in elephant years. They’ve basically come here to join our older females, Peggy and Mabel, so we’re kind of affectionately calling them, ‘The Golden Girls.'”
Cita and Lisa can be seen with Peggy and Mabel at the African elephant exhibit, with the $100,000 mosaic elephant displayed proudly in front of the exhibit.
