PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A Palm Beach Gardens police officer is being blamed for chasing after a car that later crashed, killing both people inside.

The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/2bJDbQA) reports that Jacqueline Ombres, the mother of 18-year-old Kayle Claypoole, says in a lawsuit that the Officer Tatsuaki Hayashi violated departmental rules when he chased a car driven by her daughter’s 28-year-old boyfriend, Taylor Giese, in June 2015.

Giese crashed his car into a parked truck. He died at the scene, while Claypoole, Giese’s passenger, died from her injuries several days later.

The lawsuit, which was filed against the city earlier this month, says Hayashi was chasing Giese for speeding, even though departmental rules prohibit engaging in chases for traffic violations.

City officials didn’t respond to a request for comment.
