NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Some talented young musicians are one step closer to the Capitol — with some help from the community.

The South Florida Youth Symphony has been invited to Washington, D.C. to play at the prestigious Heritage Music Festival in January. At their annual holiday show on Sunday, the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club stepped up to help.

The local organization presented the symphony with a $1,000 donation, much to the gratitude of Marjorie Hahn, the symphony’s executive and musical director. “They’ve helped us on many occasions to spread our wings out a little bit into the community, so we’re very thankful that they came forward to donate this wonderful check today of $1,000 for our trip,” she said.

The symphony has set up a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising $40,000. Since its creation 52 years ago, no student has ever been turned away over financial concerns.
