STUART, Fla. (WSVN) — Hundreds hit the beach to protest an algae emergency on Florida’s Trasure Coast, Saturday morning.

Demonstrators flooded Stuart Beach, forming the words “Buy the Land” on the sand. The group called for the state to purchase 50,000 acres of land in the Everglades Agricultural Area to store water from Lake Okeechobee.

Pollutants from the lake were flushed out to sea, causing a massive bloom of foul-smelling algae.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in four counties. The Army Corps of Engineers is taking steps to reduce the amount of water flowing out from Lake Okeechobee.
