HIALEAH, FLA. (WSVN) - Hundreds of people showed their support at a 5K race for South Dade Sr. High Principal Javier Perez, Sunday.

The race, which began around 8 a.m., had nearly 800 participants.

The objective of the race, held at Amelia Earhart Park, is to raise money for Perez’s medical bills. Perez was struck by an SUV in April while he was coaching a Little League game for his son. The driver of the SUV was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

The 5K comes the day after a Bingo benefit game was held for Perez. “Jav is a great guy in the community, he is a principal in our public schools system, he loves sports, he loves people, he loves to be out in the community, and he’s a great pillar in our community,” said Bingo participant West Perry.

Perez’s wife and two children were present at the race, where a proclamation was also made for Perez. The proclamation marks June 5 as Javier Perez day. “Every one of you here today is present for Javi and my family,” said Perez’s wife. “I can never put into words what that feels like. All I can say is thank you, but that doesn’t seem to be enough. Javi and I are truly humble for the generosity and overcome with gratitude.”

Many have said that the fundraising isn’t going to stop until Perez’s family has enough money to get the help they need. “We want to make sure that he knows that we’re here to support him and his family knows that we’re here to support him, and no matter what they need, whatever God can’t handle, were gonna help the family with,” said Perez’s friend, Giovanna Blanco.
