HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - Residents in a Hollywood neighborhood should expect power outages after a truck crashed and knocked down power lines.

Hollywood Police officers responded to the scene of the crash near Harrison Street and A1A at around 10 a.m., Monday.

Officials said a garbage truck crashed into a power pole, causing that pole to topple over. The wires from the downed pole caused another pole to topple over as well.

“We heard the noise, ran out,” witness Jackie Simmons said. “The dump truck had hit the pole there. It fell on the yellow house, and smoke started spreading up very early this morning.”

7SkyForce HD flew over the scene where one of the poles could be seen near the side of the roadway.

“The truck ran into the pole– hit one pole and yanked the other one down,” Miami Transfer Company spokesperson Alain Yano said. “Unbelievable. Somebody would’ve been standing there, they would’ve definitely gotten hurt.”

Pictures posted to the Hollywood Police Department’s Twitter showed the other downed pole stopped against an apartment building.

According to investigators, there was a woman inside the apartment building at the time of the incident and is said to be OK.

Joe Degan and Patricia Degan are visiting from Massachusetts and were waking up when their power went out.

“We woke up while Patty was working on her hair, and all the electric went off,” Joe said. “This has been flooded ever since we’ve been here.”

Florida Power and Light crews are currently on scene working on repairs.

Before crews began working to clear the downed poles, they had to remove the standing water brought in from the king tides.

“The water was causing us problems because with the equipment when we get the crane in, we put the straps on the poles and stuff, the water’s gonna be a problem,” Yano said. “Plus, we can’t see what laying under the water, so the water has to be taken out for us to do our job.”

“We’ll pull the old poles out, and we’ll set the new ones after we drain the water and get everybody back to normal,” Miami Transfer Company spokesperson Buddy Coppola said.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators said the apartment that one of the poles landed on suffered structural damage. It is unknown if the women will be able to return home once the situation returns to normal.

It remains unclear how long it will take for crews to remove the stricken poles and install new ones in its place.
