HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida family dealing with hard times after losing their home in a fire is giving thanks after receiving support from their community.

Concerned community members came together, Saturday afternoon, to hold a surprise fundraiser for Davie resident David Cohen and his family. The event took place at the Anchor Inn, located at 6389 Sheridan St., in Hollywood, and it featured raffles and a donation box to benefit the Cohens.

The outpouring of generosity comes after the family’s home in Davie Road burned down, Aug. 17.

David Cohen told 7News he and his family were blown away by the kindness. “It touches my heart that people do care and people love,” he said. “It’s like the movie ‘Pay It Forward.’ People are coming together.”

Organizers said the raffle fundraiser raised about $1,900. Prior to the event, the Cohens, who do not have homeowners’ insurance, said they’d already received about $10,000, along with clothing and school supplies.
