MIAMI (WSVN) - A police sergeant was sentenced to community service and probation after he was convicted of stealing county gasoline to fill up his wife’s car.

Miami-Dade Police Sergeant Emil Van Lugo was arrested in May of 2015 after records showed the amount of fuel his police vehicle used exceeded the miles driven by the car. Investigators used surveillance videos from a county gas station and home security cameras, which showed him filling up gas cans then filling up his wife’s BMW sedan at his home.

Van Lugo must perform 100 hours of community service and serve three year’s probation for the theft.

Family and friends who spoke on his behalf at the sentencing said Van Lugo is no longer on the force, and he now plans to work in real estate.
