MARATHON, Fla. (AP) — Two people died after a small plane crashed shortly after taking off Sunday morning from the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport.
The aircraft, a 1961 Cessna 210 Centurion, was bound for Savannah, Georgia, when it departed at around 6:30 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration in Miami.
Authorities say the wreckage went unnoticed until shortly after 9 a.m., when a passing boater spotted a body floating in the water. A second body was later recovered.
The Monroe Sheriff’s Office says the two were believed to be the only people on board the flight, but a dive team is searching waters near Rachael Key.
The identities of the victims were under investigation.
The FAA said it would be handling the investigation but that National Transportation and Safety Board would determine the cause of the crash.
The Centurion is a single-engine aircraft that usually sits six people.
