Florida senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson are pushing for a $1.1 billion proposal to help fight the Zika virus emergency that has made its way to Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Democratic Florida Sen. Bill Nelson are urging the U.S. Senate, which is on break until September, to reconvene and be called into a special session to vote on the proposal.

“We need to fund this as quickly as possible,” said Rubio. “I hope that both parties put this aside. I hope my colleagues around the country don’t continue to believe that this is not their issue, that this is something happening far away because just as this is happening in Miami-Dade County this week, I believe it won’t be long before other jurisdictions, other states and other communities in the state and in this country will face the same situation.”

“This is a healthcare crisis of enormous proportions,” said Nelson, “and the congress has to stop sticking its head in the sand playing like it is not going to do anything.”
