FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a 78-year-old South Florida hand surgeon died in a plane crash.

Mount Sinai Medical Center said in a statement that Dr. Michael Russin was found dead Monday in wreckage found west of Fort Lauderdale.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Doug Brazy tells the SunSentinel that airboats hauled away half of the wreckage from the marshy site Tuesday.

Brazy says Russin was operating an experimental aircraft when it fell into the swamp. He was the only person on board.

According to Brazy, the two-seater plane was home-built by its previous owner in 2010.

Russin was heading from Boca Raton to Miami when the crash happened. The Florida Civil Air Patrol was alerted early Monday and found the wreckage around daybreak.

An investigation continues.
