MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FLA. (WSVN) - American Airlines made history, Wednesday morning, when the company’s first flight to Cuba in decades departed from Miami International Airport.

American Airlines became the second U.S. airline to make its first commercial flight to the island nation, Wednesday at 10 a.m., with stops in the cities of Cienfuegos and Holguín.

Many passengers were excited to be part of this memorable moment. Mike Riveron said, “That’s why I am here. I want to be one of the firsts. It’s nice…a nice feeling.”

American celebrated the historic flight with an inaugural gate event with their employees and passengers.

Starting today, the airline will be jetting off from Miami to Cienfuegos and Holguín. Starting Friday, American will launch flights from Miami to Santa Clara and Camagüey. On Sept. 11, service will begin from Miami to Varadero.

Later this year, service from Miami to the country’s capital of Havana will begin.

American Airlines plans to have the most flights to Cuba than any other U.S. airline.

The airline has offered charter jets to Cuba for 25 years.

The company is the second U.S. airline to launch commercial flights to Cuba in decades. JetBlue also began flights to the island last week.
