DAVIE, FLA. (WSVN) - A family gathered to mourn the loss of a loved one at a Davie home when, officials said, a fire broke out, injuring two firefighters.
Nearly 200 people were at the family home along Southwest 61st Avenue and Fourth Court after a funeral service for 88-year-old Mayme Griffin, Sunday. Shortly after many attendees went home, a fire sparked and tore through the attic, at around 10 p.m.
Officials said crews put out the flames fairly quickly, but not before extensive damage was done to the house.
None of the residents were hurt. However, two firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion.
The owner of the home is part of the Griffin family, a descendant of one of Davie’s founders. The Griffin family owned the land on which Griffin Road was built.
The family said they believe an electrical problem caused the fire. “There was, it appears like, an attic fire, perhaps electrical that occurred last night. We had a service for my mom who had just passed away,” said Rebecca Griffin, Mayme’s daughter. “We had 200 people here. Three hours later, the smell hit from the attic, and there was a fire.”
Crews have been at the Griffin home all day Monday in an effort to repair some of the damage. Mayme’s husband, who lives in the home, is currently staying with other relatives.
