MIAMI (WSVN) - An initiative to help students reach their goals has launched in South Florida, and it all starts with attendance.

The cause, My Brother’s Keeper, was started by President Obama and schools are taking advantage of the program.

Miami Dolphins defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh was at Booker T. Washington High School to help kick off the cause. He handed out backpacks stuffed with school supplies while urging students about the importance of hitting the books.

“Because of education. Education is something you can never take away,” Suh said. “I’m a football player, but I pride myself in being educated, and at the same time, being more than just an athlete, so that’s why it’s important to me.”

This program pairs excessively absent students with an adult who will serve as a mentor.
