MIAMI (WSVN) - After declaring a state of emergency a day earlier, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about Hurricane Dorian at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
DeSantis toured the NHC and met with oceanographers and hurricane experts to get the latest information about Dorian’s potential impact on Florida, which is forecast to be devastating.
DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 26 counties exclusively along the coast of Florida, but the declarations are expected to increase overtime.
“The message I think, right now, is that all Floridians really need to monitor Hurricane Dorian and make the necessary preparations,” DeSantis said in his speech. “This is a track that has a significant amount of uncertainty. I was talking with Ken and some of these people and you can make a case for places like Miami and the Keys to get impacted, you can make a case for Northern Florida and, obviously, Central Florida, so really, the key is to have your plan and make those preparations right now.”
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez also spoke about Hurricane Dorian at a press conference, informing residents about preparations they need to make should they be impacted by the storm.
“Now is definitely the time for everyone to begin completing any preparations that are time-consuming,” Gimenez said. “Residents should make sure that emergency equipment, such as hurricane shutters and battery-powered radios, are in good working order and begin putting up all the shutters that are more difficult to assemble.”
Gimenez also said other preparations include buying bottled water. However, he noted, tap water is fine if you’re not able to get bottled water.
Meanwhile, more emergency declarations may go up around the state of Florida, and evacuation orders may be issued locally depending on the track of Dorian.
