POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - Deputies are conducting an investigation near a canal in Pompano Beach.
Nearly 24 hours after a woman and a baby were found inside a car in a canal, a makeshift memorial sits on the grass along the water, in memory of the driver who died.
“The infant was in a car seat, appeared to be unharmed. The first arriving deputy started CPR on the adult female until rescue arrived,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Veda Coleman-Wright.
The woman, who police are not identifying, was suffering from gunshot wounds.
She died later at the hospital.
“The infant, who is not the victim’s child, has been reunited with her family, and she is doing OK,” said Coleman-Wright.
A man said he was on his way home from a convenience store when he saw the car in the canal around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, near Northwest 8th Street and 10th Avenue, next to Mitchell Moore Park.
“And it seems as though that they possibly were able to get both of them out of the vehicle before deputies and rescue arrived,” said Coleman-Wright.
After taking both the woman and the baby to the hospital, BSO fire rescue and divers got to work searching in the water for clues.
Family and friends of the victim were later seen laying flowers at the scene where she died.
As night fell, police continued their search for the person who shot and killed a woman and almost killed a baby.
“Homicide detectives are trying to determine what led up to this crash, what led up to the shooting, and also the circumstances surrounding this and the sequence of events,” said Coleman-Wright.
