Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene at Southwest 148th Street and U.S. 1, just before 5 a.m., Tuesday.

According to investigators, the driver of a BMW was traveling northbound on U.S. 1, when it crashed into a Publix truck that was making a right turn.

7Skyforce flew over the scene, as rescue crews could be seen trying to free the driver of the mangled car. The car was pinned underneath the trailer portion of the truck for several hours.

The driver of the BMW died on the scene, and a passenger was transported to Jackson South Trauma Center. His condition is unknown.

The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries, according to officials.

U.S. 1 had to be shut down north and southbound — between Southwest 144th and 152nd streets — for hours until the scene was cleared.
